How to Rank for Multiple Cities

The structure that lets one business compete in a dozen markets without thin pages.

7 min read

Ranking outside the city where your address sits is the hardest part of local search, because the map pack heavily favors proximity. The organic results are where you win the surrounding markets.

Build a page per market, properly

Each city page needs reasons to exist: the specific services you run there, work you've done nearby, conditions unique to that market, and how you cover it. If the only difference between two pages is the city name, neither will rank for long.

Structure that scales

  • A parent page for the service
  • A city page per market, linked from the service page
  • Service-in-city pages where demand justifies them
  • Nearby-market links between adjacent city pages

Signals beyond the page

  • Reviews that mention the surrounding towns naturally
  • Local links from organizations in those markets
  • Project photos and content tied to those areas

Where businesses go wrong

Publishing forty near-identical pages at once. Publish the markets you truly serve, make each one genuinely useful, and add more as you earn the right to.
