Local SEO Basics for Service Businesses

What actually moves local rankings, in the order you should tackle it.

8 min read

Local SEO gets described as a mystery. It isn't. It's three things: a clear Google Business Profile, a website that states what you do and where, and enough consistency across the web that Google trusts both.

Your Google Business Profile

This is the single highest-leverage asset in local search, and it's free. Complete every field. Choose the most specific primary category available. Add real photos. Keep hours accurate, including holidays. Ask for reviews consistently and respond to all of them.

Your website structure

The profile and the website reinforce each other. Your site should have a page for each service, honest coverage of each market, and business information that matches your profile exactly.

  • One page per service, not one combined page
  • Location pages for markets you genuinely serve
  • Name, address, and phone consistent everywhere
  • LocalBusiness structured data matching your visible information
  • Internal links connecting services to the markets they're offered in

Consistency across the web

Citations matter less than they did a decade ago, but inconsistency still hurts. An old address on a directory listing creates doubt. Fix the major ones and don't buy a package promising 500 listings.

Reviews

Volume, recency, and response rate all matter. The most effective system is the simplest: ask every satisfied customer, at the moment the job is finished, with a direct link.

What to ignore

Anyone guaranteeing a number one ranking. Anyone selling keyword stuffing. Anyone promising results in thirty days in a competitive market. Local SEO compounds, and the businesses that win are the ones that keep at it after the first quarter.
