The most expensive mistake in local web design isn't a bad design. It's a good design that launches without a migration plan and takes six years of search equity down with it.
Measure before you touch anything
Export every URL. Pull traffic and ranking data for each one. Note which pages have inbound links. You cannot protect what you haven't documented.
Decide the fate of every URL
- Keep — same URL, improved page
- Merge — combine into a stronger page, redirect the old URL
- Expand — split a page that was trying to cover too much
- Retire — redirect to the closest relevant page, never to the homepage by default
Don't lose content in the name of clean design
Minimal design is good. Deleting the paragraphs that explain your services is not. If a page ranks, understand why before cutting anything from it.
Redirects before launch, not after
Every changed URL needs a 301 to its closest equivalent. Test them on staging. A week of 404s on your best pages is a real, measurable cost.
Watch the first month closely
Submit the new sitemap. Watch Search Console for crawl errors and coverage drops. Compare page-level traffic against your baseline weekly. Small dips are normal for a few weeks; sustained drops on specific pages mean something needs fixing.
