How Many Pages Should a Small Business Website Have?

A formula: one page per service you sell, one per market you serve, plus the questions buyers ask before calling.

6 min read

There's no magic number, but there is a formula. Count your services. Count the markets you'd genuinely take work in. Add the questions people ask before they hire. That's your page count.

Start with services

Every distinct service is a distinct search with distinct intent and often a very different job value. One combined services page asks Google to rank a single URL for a dozen different queries, which it rarely will.

Add markets

A single service-area page listing eight cities in a paragraph will not rank in seven of them. Build a page per market you actually serve — and none for markets you wouldn't drive to.

Add buying-stage content

  • Cost and pricing questions
  • Process and timeline
  • Comparisons between options you offer
  • Proof: completed work, reviews, credentials

A realistic target

Most local service businesses land somewhere between 15 and 60 pages at launch, then grow. A five-page site is almost always too small to compete.

What not to do

Don't pad. A page that exists only to hold a keyword underperforms and can weaken the pages around it. Every page should be one you'd happily send a customer to directly.
